Hot Steams and Calpurnia

I find it very odd that Calpurnia refers to "Hot Steams" as nigger-talk. I know that during the time period that the book takes place most colored people were illiterate, but you never hear of one colored person refering to others as niggers.I think that Calpurnia is very knowledgable and expects Scout to act in the same fashion.

Thats true. I think Calpurnia expects Scout to act in that same fashion, if not better, because she is white, and in that time period whites were supposed to act with more composure and intelligence than blacks, but because Scout is just a kid and Calpurnia is in charge, she feels she must teach and discipline Scout.

I like to refer to it as thug talk. Hot steams just seems perpousterous. Thug talk is much better.
