I'm not sure I was wondering about that too. It seems like something bad might have happened in his past and he wants to forget about it.
Maybe Atticus wanted to keep his children from thinking weapons as a fun toy. Like so many other parents now, he might have wanted his children to grow up without itchy trigger-fingers or only one eye. Something might have also happened while he was using a gun, too. Perhaps someone got hurt and, again, he didn't want that happening to his children.
That is a good possibility High-Voltage I agree with you something could have happened that makes him ashamed of it in a way.
Yes, this is a mystery to be uncovered. I wonder if it'll be revealed later on in the book. Perhaps the reason as to why he hid that from his kids, is because something happened while he was a shooter and he doesn't want to remember it for one reason or another. Or maybe he just doesn't feel it necessary to tell them. I mean, I doubt your parents have told you everything about their past.
Time avenged- when you said he doesn't wnat them to think that weapons are a toy, I would have to disagree. I'm sorry, im trying to say this polietly but Atticus did have his brother buy both Jem and Scout guns for christmas. i doubt thats why he didnt tell them about his past.
Babyspice-I agree with you, why would he have his brother buy them for him if that was the case?
He wants his kids to be normal and not turn into savages. Especially his little tomboy Scout. We all know that if she knew how to shoot many would end up in danger.
It is simple. He is waiting for them to mess up really bad, so to punish them he says he will shoot them. They will think he is a bad shot, so accept the punishment. What they won't know is he will plant one between the eyes.
Simply because he is not a great shooter. The dog got scared from the gun shot, and had a heart attack. Atticus missed him by a mile.
I think there must be something in his past that he does not want to share involving a gun. Maybe something that is hurtful or embarassing for him to think about. I don't think it is because he doesn't want them involved in violence...he doesn't seem like the type of person who would have an issue with his children playing with guns.
