Yeah, it is short for no Ma'am.
Well I believe she says nome because she believes in mystical creatures. So everytime she says nome she is praying to the great nomes.
I do not believe that she is talking about mystical creatures. I believe that the way she talks in the book is just her Southern accent. Sometimes they just squish words together. For example, people say "ya'll" instead of "you all".

It is defanentally a mix between nope and no! You have to be blind not to see that right off the bat! Or it could possibly be that she is talking about the great garden nomes that rule the garden!
Uh.. if she was praying to the garden creatures of my dreams, she would be saying Gnome. Trust me, I'm an expert.
when she says nome she is referring to the little plastic men that stand guard in many front lawns in america. i dont know what you guys are talking about when you say its a mix between no and nope when there is a M in there and there is no M in no or nope. obviously you guys are all a few fries short of a mighty meal and dont know how to annalize text
All sides count, so yes, we do need taskmaster's opinion. Don't start being rude now. I agree with taskmaster. It can't be anything mythical and reminds people again that the story takes place in the south. I think it is what Authority Figure thought. "No ma'am."
