Mayella

I didn't really like Mayella too much. She was kind of rude in a way and it just got annoying how she would say Atticus kept mocking her.

Mayella was an asset to this story.
She provided the girl for everyone to hate and love at the same time. I thank Harper Lee for including her.

I agree, i think that shes definetly a liar. It's getting old, and annoying.

It is annoying but I can't help but feel sorry for her. I mean, she has to live with a drunk abusive father who makes her lie just to cover up the beating he has given to her. That sounds like a pretty crappy life to me.

If you had an abusive father you would lie your pants off too. she is just scared.

I have no idea what to think. Mayella was rude, but she could just see that they don't have a very good case and is scared that her father will be even worse if he's found as the cause.

I don't think that it's Mayella's fault how rude she is. She has never in her life been called "Miss" or whatever he says. She knows how low she is on the totem pole, and she is used to being treated like dirt. If you were in her position you would think that simple cortousy was mocking.

I agree that she could just be scared of her father, but crying could just be one way that she wins pity from the jury.

Well she has never been in that sort of situation. She doesn't know how to handle the constant questioning. She probably thought no one would even bother to ask her about what happened since it was her word against a black man's.

Thunder fist why would you love Mayella? I think she is a lying rat and overall straight up creepy.

Mayella is rude. Wouldn't you be rude too if you were treated like a piece of gum on everyone's shoe. Mayella is the piece of gum that everyone steps on and no matter how much they try to scrap her off, she's still there.

Gum? No one talks to her so how can they be trying to get ride of her? It sounds like you were trying really hard to think of something funny, but it didn't work.

Tom Robinson was probably the only man to treat Mayella with kindness, so she ignorantly mistakes his kindness for some kind of affection and assumes that she can put the moves on him. However, being in the position of getting caught by her obviously abusive father AND the rejection by Tom, who has a wife and children, she is embarrassed and ashamed of her behavior. She is "poor white trash" who has never known kindness or respect and as "better than you" stated, she sees simple courtesy as mockery. "Better than you"--very insightful!
